The new products team is looking for an entrepreneurial technology manager to recruit and lead a development team to prototype and launch our next new product. As the technical lead on the team, you will help define the product development process, working closely with designers, editors and product managers to imagine and create a new product for the New York Times.
You will be a part of the department that launched the NYT Now and NYT Cooking, both named Best apps of 2014 by Apple, and the popular website cooking.nytimes.com. We are a small, nimble team that works well together and cares as much about the product as the underlying technology. We have weekly product show-and-tell sessions, regular hack weeks to explore new ideas, and frequently bring in industry leaders to discuss their work in product and technology development.
You should be comfortable leading a team to improvise across a range of technologies to quickly put prototypes in front of users, and then be able to make strategic technical decisions to quickly launch and scale a new product. This is a player-coach role where you will be able to get hands on with the code and lead others.
Responsibilities:
- Set the technical strategy for the product and hire the engineering team to first prototype, and then launch, that product
- Be the senior technical voice on a cross-functional product development team
- Keep up to date on technical innovations inside and outside the company which could contribute to new products
Requirements:
- Experience hiring and leading a technical team
- Demonstrated experience launching a web or mobile application
- The ability to work collaboratively as part of a multidisciplinary team
- A strong interest in exploring new products at a media company
